The United States armed forces has a cadre of artists assigned to travel the world to portray the challenges soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines face in their lives. I came across this particular piece of artwork during a 2006 tour of the Central Command headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. It depicts an idealized version of US military operations in Afghanistan. The artist is Stewart Wavell-Smith and the painting measures eight feet (2.4 meters) tall and 28 feet (8.5 meters) long.
